What would you rather have MBA or CISSP? Why?

Top Answer : I did the management route with my Masters.  I would be happy to be a technical individual contributor now

Managing Cloud Spend in 2021Managing Cloud Spend in 2021

How are leaders managing cloud spend in 2021?

Apart from security, what IT topics really grab the board's attention?

Top Answer : If it's not about security, then it really depends on the company and where they're at. Digital strategy is different for every company, so their digital issues are different. For UKG, their biggest issue isn’t an IT issue, it's a product issue: What's the product going to be and how are we going to do cloud operations with the infrastructure, once that's figured out from a business perspective? For World 50, it's the digitization of their business: how do they translate their experiences, which have been thrust into an online-only universe in the last 12 months, and how do they continue to drive that forward in a hybrid universe? So I don't see a common theme, but everybody's investing in technology in some form. Very few companies that I'm working with don't care about it.

How have you approached implementing cloud architectures when working with private equity-backed companies?

Top Answer : In automotive, they're definitely big cloud users, but they're also leaning a lot more towards edge, because they see long-term payoff in that investment simply because of latency. 5G only gets me to the pole—from the pole in, edge computing is my way around that. So they're creating these very complicated, multi-cloud hybrid environments and the decision at the board levels, or at the senior management levels, is not around the details of the cloud, or the model. It's, "Can you get us money back in? Yes or no?"  That's why the discussion from the perspective of the PE and the split that they're doing makes no sense to me. It's like, "I'll take a quarter of this, half of that and another quarter of this and call it a company." I think that puts CIOs in a very bad way.

Do CIOs face more resistance from the board in private equity-backed companies?

Top Answer : At the end of the day though, private equity firms (PE) are there to return dollars on debt. They're not there to build technology companies. They use technology companies as a vehicle for ROI. So you have to understand that you're going to work for a company that could have an intrinsically different motivation than you might as a technologist. Vista does have a growth mindset around their companies and at the right size, they have a formula that works for them. The challenge is that the company I was in didn't fit. We were the first company they acquired that was outside that scope, and at a different point in its maturity life cycle, so their playbook wasn't necessarily relevant. But I wish I had that playbook operationally to bring to my company, because there are places where we could be leaner and more effective, but we are not motivated enough to do it around the edges. That would free up money to do some of the things we really want to do.

How should CIOs/CTOs manage cost concerns when proposing a modernization project?

Top Answer : Cost savings is not what people need to aim for when they have to modernize, it’s just table stakes at that point. There are so many other metrics to focus on: Are you reducing your technical debt? Are you becoming much more nimble?
