What advice ( experiences, projects, conversations, personal development, education) would you give to an IT Director who wants to take his or her career to the next level, maybe VP or CIO...

Top Answer : It's going to take business nous to step up to the VP or CIO position and the concomitant development of longer term strategic thinking. Becoming business oriented depends on your trajectory eg: growth through management programs or say an MBA. You have to win the trust and/or confidence of the senior executive team and earn the right to "sit at the table". That said being regarded as the "go to" person for the delivery of applicable technology solutions that solve real business problems certainly helps. Finally develop a personal plan to get there and ask the advice of a senior mentor on how to execute it whether within your current organization or externally.
